Study of ice-phobic behavior of hydrophobic and superhydrophobic coatings for high voltage power line components under snowfall conditions

Sintesi di rivestimenti idrofobici e superidrofobici con applicazioni su cavi conduttori e studio delle proprietà antighiaccio dei rivestimenti; studio della correlazione tra rugosità-idrofobicità e icefobicità dei conduttori. Esposizione di cavi conduttori rivestiti presso la stazione di prova WILD e studio del comportamento sotto condizioni nevose.

The effect of the typology, the hydrophobicity and the roughness of coated surfaces on icephobic behavior was studied. Fluorinated alumina-based and silica-based films, hydrophobic silicon commercial paints NusilTM and slipperyliquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS), were prepared and deposed on aluminum alloy specimens (rough and smooth).Shear stress analyses were carried out by using a custom-build electromechanically testing system, and the ice-adhesion strength of the coated samples was determined: hydrophobic properties of the surfaces lead to the decreasing in shear stress value but the presence of roughness on the surfaces caused a huge increasing of the ice adhesion strength. It was found that the ice-adhesion strength (τ) on silicone commercial paints was ∼ 16 times lowerthan compared to bare aluminum alloy.

Some conductor segments 50-centimeter long have been coated and exposed to winter weather at the RSE Outdoor Test Facility located in the West part of the Alps, at an altitude of 950 m asl. NusilTM paints showed a rather faster snow detachment at the end of the snowfalls, while alumina-based coatings, deposed on sandblasted conductors, evidenced a delay in ice formation of several hours, in certain weather conditions where the snowflakes have particular properties as a high liquid water content or have almost a spherical shape.
