The Use of 3D SPH based SPHERA Code to Support Flood Event Safety Analyses

The paper presents a number of numerical simulations, carried out using the SPHERA code based on the mesh less Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic technique, in order to investigate three typologies of problems connected to flood events, as a dam-break event, a solitary wave that hits a shoreline involving the town in the back and the flooding out over barrage structures or spillways. The main goal of these simulations is to show how the SPH approach can be used to study the behavior of hydraulic structures in this context without the limits due to spatial discretisation of classic approaches and with reduced costs with respect to physical models, also showing a good accuracy in comparison with traditional CFD approaches.
