arch dam considering realistic construction sequence Massimo Meghella*, Antonella Frigerio* 10th International Benchmark Workshop on Numerical Analysis of Dams Parigi, 16-18 Settembre 2009 * ERSE SpA The evaluation of initial stress-strain pattern following the development of short-term thermal and rheological effects in concrete dams, when the actual construction sequence is realistically considered/simulated, represents a difficult challenge for dam analysts and engineers. Such effects can give rise to high tensile stresses that are particularly critical for thin arch dams, where cracks can significantly affect dam safety. Theme A is aimed at evaluating the stress-strain pattern in a thin arch dam during the construction phase. Participants will be provided with the construction sequence along with physical-mechanical properties of the concrete and geometrical data of the dam. Results will be evaluated in the light of the crack patterns usually developed within this dam typology.
