Thermal simulation and experimental identification of electro-thermal model parameters for a point-focus concentrating photovoltaic module

An identification procedure of electro-thermal model parameters, that are necessary for 3D thermal modelling of point-focus concentrating photovoltaic modules, has been implemented.

The 3D thermal simulation, carried out by FEM-based software Comsol Multiphysics, needs, in fact, the correct definitions of the thermal conductivities and of the thermal capacities for all the materials constituting the module; these quantities, for an accurate thermal simulation, cannot be obtained only from literature but it is necessary their experimental determination. A theoretical and experimental procedure for the thermal characterization of a lumped parameters model has been then specified, allowing the estimate of the thermal unknown parameters and the validation of the simulations that are successively carried out by Comsol 3D model. Comsol has been used to simulate the module 3D thermal behaviour and in particular the working temperature of the solar cells operating in dark conditions under current polarisation.
