More than 6.5 GW of wind capacity has already been installed in Italy, most of which in the last four years. In 2011 the national government has set out to establish regional targets for renewable energy production in order to share, among regions, the burdens ensuing from Italy’s 17% target assigned by European Directive 2009/28/EC implementing the 20-20-20 policy of the EU. In this connection, RSE has started a research activity with the aim of better understanding the characteristics and performance of the wind farms so far deployed and consequently improving its knowledge of the relevant issues. This knowledge will be very useful for supporting decision-makers at national and regional level in view of the future development of the wind sector in Italy up to 2020 and also beyond this date. The first step of this activity has been a statistical study on the distribution of already installed wind turbines over the whole national territory, starting from a preliminary sample of about 150 wind farms of significant size. In particular, the following distribution parameters have been analysed on national and regional scale through GIS (Geographical Information System) software tools: number and density of turbines, wind turbine capacity classes, number of turbines in different wind speed classes and specific production classes, number of turbines in altitude and slope classes, number of turbines in land use classes
