A Medium Voltage Signal Generator for the Testing of Voltage Measurement Transformers

There is no doubt that the voltage measurement transformer (VT) is the most widely employed voltage transducer for medium voltage (MV) applications. The steady state operation at its rated frequency has been deeply investigated for a long time, and usually the measurement performance is evaluated in this condition. However, the increasing number of nonlinear and time varying loads as well as the generation from renewable energy sources causes significant voltage disturbances even at the MV level. The growing attention to power quality monitoring requires a measurement system with adequate bandwidth and very low distortion. Therefore, the characterization of voltage transducers in non-sinusoidal conditions becomes crucial in this scenario. Because of their diffusion, it is very important to test the suitability of conventional voltage transformers for power quality assessment. In this case it is necessary to have available a voltage generator able to impose arbitrary waveforms, featuring a full scale range in the order of tens of kilovolt and an output power adequate to feed the VT to be tested. In this paper a proposal of a medium voltage signal generator for VT characterization is presented. The main aim of the work is to develop an architecture which can be easily implemented by employing some devices which are usually already present in all laboratories involved in the calibration of VTs.
