Aerosol retention in containment leak paths: indications for a code model in the light of Colima experimental results

In questo articolo è presentato un esperimento trasporto di aerosol in crepe di calcestruzzo in condizioni incidentali, realizzato da RSE e CEA utilizzando la facily COLIMA. I risultati sperimentali sono analizzati attraverso un approccio Euleriano e viene proposto un modello Lagrangiano fast- running.

A number of code models have been addressed to predict aerosol retention in containment concrete cracks, even if their validation requires the comparison with representative experimental data, where the geometric characteristics of the crack to be used in the aerosol transport equations can be established. To this aim, RSE and CEA organized an experimental activity, within the PLINIUS FP6 project, where prototypic aerosol particles were generated with a thermitic reaction in the facility COLIMA and transported through a representative sample of cracked concrete with well-determined characteristics, where temperature, pressure drop and gas leakage were properly reproduced. The paper reports the approach adopted for the dimensioning of the experimental test,  the test procedure and the measured parameters. The obtained results are also discussed in the light of the present knowledge about aerosol behaviour within tortuous paths. Using the code ECART as a support, good agreement between the traditional aerosol models and the experimental results is found, even if the Eulerian simulation is slowed down by the very short residence time of the gas flow inside the crack. The main features of an ad-hoc Lagrangian approach, consistent with the mechanistic formulations currently used in source term tools and easy to be implemented in severe accident system codes, is illustrated.
