Assessment of operation and performance of a pv-hybrid power plant after 8 years of operation for the electrification of a remote community in Italy

RSE ha installato nel 2004 un impianto ibrido di generazione ad energie rinnovabili per l’elettrificazione di una comunità isolata, che sta tuttora correttamente alimentando 15 utenze domestiche. I dati sperimentali di funzionamento sono elaborati ed analizzati al fine di verificare la corretta operatività dell’impianto ed incrementare le conoscenze riguardo questa tipologia di elettrificazione.

RSE experience on field has shown that Renewable Energy (RE) power plants can conveniently supplyelectricity to domestic and small commercial loads in remote communities not yet connected to the electric grid, with satisfying reliability. In this context, an experimental work has been started some years ago in order to analyze, develop and verify new concepts for RE hybrid plant, to be used for electrification of isolated communities. A hybrid renewable energy power plant (14,2 kWp PV generator, 10 kVA wind generator, 169 kWh lead-acid batteries, 22 kVA emergency Diesel generator, 22 kW inverters) has been installed by RSE in 2004, which is currently effectively supplying electricity to 15 family houses of the remote communities of Bresciadega and Dosselli in Val Codera (SO, Italy), sited at 1200 m asl and unreachable by road. The plant has been monitored since the installation time and its operating data have been collected by RSE and continuously analyzed to check the status of the plant and its components, and to detect possible faults. Experimental data of a Renewable Energy power plant, operating for a long time in real condition of remote community electrification, are giving significant information on the proper design and management of such power plants. Moreover a techno-economic analysis was carried out by reviewingand elaborating real plant operational data through a hybrid power plant simulation software (HOMER®), in order to optimize the power plant and its components.
