Assessment of the pollution performance of composite insulators

The paper describes and discusses the tests results obtained under AC and DC voltages on new and aged insulators with reference in particular to the application of the recent modified solid layer method proposed by CIGRE.

The assessment of the pollution performance of composite insulators is still an open problem, due to the fact that their surface condition characteristics change during the insulator life, following partial loss of hydrorepellency. The ideal pollution method should be obviously well defined and should give similar results when applied in different laboratories (high levels of reproducibility and repeatability) but, even more important, should be representative, that is should give indications valid to estimate the pollution performance of the insulators in service. The paper addresses especially the aspect of the representativeness of the recent modified solid layer method proposed by CIGRE and of the salt fog method.Tests results obtained under AC and DC voltages on new and aged insulators are reported and discussed. On the basis of the results obtained considerations about the suitability of the procedure considered to represent the performance of the insulators in service are made. Application of the results to the design of composite insulators under pollution conditions is also discussed.
