    Biometano, dopo il decreto servono le norme

    Il decreto interministeriale che definisce il quadro di riferimento per la produzione, il trasporto, l’utilizzo e l’incentivazione del biometano è stato pubblicato sulla Gazzetta Ufficiale n. 295 del 17/12/2013. L’articolo riporta alcune considerazioni tecniche utili a comprendere il contenuto e la portata del decreto e fa il punto sullo stato della normativa europea sulla qualità del biometano per l’immissione nella rete del gas naturale e l’utilizzo nell’autotrazione.

    Italy is one of the largest European biogas producers. The raw biogas has a low heating value and until now has been used only onsite in Italy, for heat and/or electric power generation. In other European countries, such as Germany and Sweden, biogas upgrading systems have been installed. These plants allow to obtain, through proper chemical physical processes, a more valuable fuel named biomethane, very similar to the natural gas from the grid.

    In the lack of a clear cut legislative and regulatory framework, biomethane has been produced in Italy only in few experimental and prototype plants. The recent approval of the inter-ministerial decree opens interesting perspectives also in our country for the development and diffusion of this fuel. Now it can be produced and injected in the natural gas national grid or fed into trucks and cars. The article explores some aspects of the decree and outlines the progresses of European standards on the biomethane quality requirements.
