A low cost spectroscopic reflectometer was designed and tested to measure the performance of coatings used for photovoltaic cells and LEDs. The instrument can also be used for spectroscopic transmission measurements and for measuring the scattered light from the coatings.
A custom low cost spectroscopic reflectometer was designed and built. Its main application is the characterization of optical coating for photovoltaic cells and LEDs. It is a compact and multi-purpose instrument capable of performing spectral reflection and transmission measurements in a wide spectral range (300nm ÷ 1000nm) and in a wide range of incidence angles (3° ÷ >80°). The accuracy on the incident angle is about 1°. It can also accommodate large samples. A software developed in Labview was used to simulate the spectral reflection of the coating as a function of the layers thickness and of the coatings optical properties. In this way it is possible to verify the coating behaviour and in some cases to determine the thickness of the different layers. The instrument cost can be reduced down to 5500€, such cost is much lower than commercial instruments for that class. Being a custom and modular product it is quite easy to adapt it to the measurement needs. It could also be improved by inserting polarisers to the light source and to the spectrometer input so to improve its capabilities, making it more similar to an ellipsometer.
