Salt detection on high voltage insulators by means of a LIBS system

La memoria descrive l’attività svolta in RSE relativa alla sperimentazione della tecnica LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) per la valutazione della contaminazione salina degli isolatori delle line elettriche di alta tensione.

Since the insulators used in overhead power lines located in coastal areas generally suffer from salt (NaCl) contamination accumulation, their superficial conductivity can strongly be enhanced by the presence of moisture in the air. When this occurs, the risk of insulator flashovers and possible power outages becomes significant. To overcome this problem we have experimentally investigated the possibility of utilizing a Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) system for periodically monitoring the amount of salt deposited on the insulators. Preliminary tests have been carried out aimed at identifying experimental conditions necessary to create a significant break down process in wide band gap ionic materials, like NaCl, that are transparent to the visible-IR low energy photons. Characterization of the plasma formation process, obtained by means of a streak camera based detection system, will be presented together with preliminary results obtained on contaminated high voltage ceramic insulators.
