Test of anti-islanding protections according to IEC 62116: an experimental feasibility assessment

L’articolo presenta le attività di laboratorio, supportate da analisi teorico-modellistiche, svolte presso RSE e volte a mettere in luce le criticità di realizzazione delle prove della protezione di interfaccia di inverter per fotovoltaico, così come previste dalla norma IEC 62116.

One of the main issues associated to the increasing diffusion of inverter based Distributed Generators (DGs) consists in the possibility that they could supply portions of the distribution network, when disconnected from the main network. Such a condition, called unwanted island, is potentially critical both for security, since the distribution network remains energized even if disconnected from the rest of the system, and for consumers’ operations, since the voltage level and the frequency of the island are not related with those of the mains grid. The paper describes the experimental and theoretical activities performed by RSE for the feasibility assessment of the IEC 62116 test procedures. Theoretical and modeling activities allowed the quantification of the relation between the active and reactive power unbalances, between EUT and loads, and island voltage and frequency behaviors. They also allowed to put into evidence the role of the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) of the photovoltaic inverters in creating dynamic voltage unbalances during islanding.
