The role of innovative grid-impacting technologies in the South East Europe Region: an integrated zonal analysis based on GridTech scenarios

L’articolo presenta varie analisi al 2030 dello studio pan-europeo di GridTech, con l’obiettivo di valutare in particolare l’impatto delle interconnessioni-chiave tra l’Italia e le altre zone della regione del Sud-Est Europa (SEE).

The development of adequate transmission infrastructures and grid-impacting technologies in Europe will play a crucial role towards the achievement of ambitious decarbonisation targets set for 2020, 2030 and beyond by the European Union (EU). Innovative technological options may in fact be of support to foster the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and to realise the European Energy Union, set as strategic target by the European Commission. In this framework, the main objective of the GridTech project has been to conduct an integrated assessment of new grid-impacting technologies and their implementation into the European power system, comparing different technological options towards full RES exploitation, with the lowest possible total electricity cost.

For the purpose of GridTech project, the focus has been on the innovative technologies that may (directly or indirectly) impact on the transmission grid development and operation and support the integration of variable RES. These elements are grouped in Transmission Grid Technologies (TGT), Energy Storage Technologies (EST), Electricity Demand Technologies (EDT). The approach of the project entails the analysis of the 2020, 2030 and 2050 time horizons, to assess which innovative technologies and where, when, and to which extent they could effectively contribute to the further development of the European transmission grid. The present paper focuses on some 2030 analyses of the South East Europe (SEE) Region as part of the GridTech pan-European study.

Different cases have been considered, starting from the approach adopted within GridTech to assess developments and applications of grid-impacting technologies such as HVDC, bulk storage and demand response. Moreover, further analyses have been conducted including the detailed Italian zonal system in the pan-European model, with the goals to primarily evaluate the impact and the benefits of key links interconnecting Italy with the other zones of the SEE Region. In this perspective, some sensitivity cases have been carried out as well.
